It’s Time to Start! Living a Healthier Life!

While you are out fundraising this month and helping change others lives start changing your own and living a healthier life. So get out there and get physical. Grab family grab friends and make a day of it. There are few things as rewarding as being active and healthy. Below is some information on how a little bit of exercise can change your life.

Exercise and Fitness

Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and most Americans are not physically active enough to gain any health benefits. Swimming, cycling, jogging, skiing, aerobic dancing, walking or many other activities can help your heart. Whether it's included in a structured exercise program or part of your daily routine, all physical activity adds up to a healthier heart.

According to the latest joint American Heart Association/American College of Sports Medicine guidelines on physical activity, all healthy adults ages 18-65 should be getting at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity five days of the week. However, there are additional guidelines for those 65 and older, or for those 50-64 with chronic conditions or physical functional limitations (e.g., arthritis) that affect movement ability or physical fitness. Be sure to check with your doctor before starting any exercise program.

Food and Fitness

Physical inactivity is not the only risk factor you have to watch out for. Eating unhealthy can severely increase your chances of cardiovascular disease. That is why it is important to watch what you eat. The American Heart Association has put together some guidelines that are not hard to follow and will have you making meals heart friendly in no time!

Start! Making a Difference!

Supporting the fight against heart disease and stroke is a rewarding experience and is really very simple.

  • Sign up with your company team or build your own team of family and friends.
  • Follow the steps to create a personalized webpage showing your goal and your reasons for supporting the American Heart Association.
  • Send e-mails to your contacts asking them to make a secure online donation toward your campaign. Donors can expand their gift if they work for a matching gift company.
  • Attend the Start! Greater Washington Heart Walk and celebrate your achievement.

  • Since 1924 the American Heart Association has helped protect people of all ages and ethnicities from the ravages of heart disease and stroke. These diseases, the Nation's No.1 and No.3 killers, claim more than 910,000 American lives a year. The association invested more than $543 million in fiscal year 2005-06 for research, professional and public education, and advocacy so people across America can live stronger, longer lives.

Thanks to all our walkers, donors and volunteers who have accepted the challenge to help fight heart disease and stroke. We cannot achieve our mission without each one of you!
