2014 Cedar Valley Heart Walk

Join Us as we Walk...

We will be starting from The Mudd Group in Technology Park, Cedar Falls and will be walking around the South Lake of Prairie Lakes Park. Each lap is 1.2 miles.
• The 1st lap is for those living with or lost to heart disease or stroke
• The 2nd lap is for the family, friends and caregivers that love them
• The 3rd lap is for research and awareness for a healthier Cedar Valley

Justin, Lisa and big brother, Collin, welcomed Keegan Robert O'Brien into the world on Friday, September 24, 2010. It was a normal pregnancy and delivery. Keegan weighed 6 lbs, 10 oz and was healthy. The day Keegan was released from the hospital the nurse mentioned that his breathing looked different and recommended an x-ray with the pediatrician. An x-ray was taken of Keegan's chest and we were released to go home with a follow-up on Tuesday.

At Keegan's follow-up appointment a heart murmur was heard and another chest x-ray was taken. A couple of hours later we received a phone call that would change our lives. Keegan would need to be admitted into the hospital. We went to the pediatrician's office where it was explained to us that Keegan's xrays showed that his chest was filled with air. It could be pneumonia or his heart causing this.

Keegan was admitted and seen by a cardiac pediatrician who performed an echo cardiogram of his heart. It was determined that his aorta was pinched and closing, affecting his breathing. Keegan would need further monitoring and possible surgery in the future due to this defect. He was immediately ambulanced to Iowa City to the pediatric children’s intensive care unit, where he was placed in a special incubator and monitored closely for a week. While he was there he was sung the Iowa Fight song by all the nurses and doctors! Read more...

The American Heart Association is the largest voluntary health organization working to prevent, treat and defeat heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. These diseases, the Nation's No.1 and No.4 killers, claim more than 813,804 American lives a year. Thanks to all our walkers, donors and volunteers who have accepted the challenge to help fight heart disease and stroke. We cannot achieve our mission without each one of you!
