Remembering Windell

Windell Daniels was a native of Winter Park, Florida. He served his country in Vietnam in the Marine Corps Reserve, received an Associate in Applied Science degree from Cape Fear Community College and was employed by Koch Materials as Plant Manager for 19 years.

After Windell retired, he pursued his own business interest in real estate and purchased the historic William Hooper School. The property was redeveloped into a senior complex and on this same property he completed a 50 unit apartment development to serve as low and moderate income housing.

Windell had countless community affiliations. He served on the Wilmington Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, the UNCW Board of Trustees, and Co-Chaired the Cape Fear Ten Year Homeless Plan among other organizations. Because of his extensive involvement in the community, capable leadership and on-going business ventures, Windell had been widely recognized and was the recipient of numerous awards. He attributed his success to hard work, determination, and a supportive family who prayed and worked together as a team.

Windell and his wife of 38 years, Wilma, were blessed with two sons, Windell Jamar and Euran and also two grandchildren, Simone and Christopher. In April of 2008, the life of Windell Daniels, one of Wilmington’s great community leaders, was cut short at 60 years old. He suffered a sudden heart attack while welcoming friends to a celebratory dinner. The Daniels Family has worked tirelessly to raise funds for the American Heart Association and their mission to fight heart disease and stroke.

Please join us for the 2009 Start! Cape Fear Heart Walk in tribute to Windell and to all of those who have lost their lives much too early from cardiovascular disease.

Since 1924 the American Heart Association has helped protect people of all ages and ethnicities from the ravages of heart disease and stroke. These diseases, the Nation's No.1 and No.3 killers, claim more than 910,000 American lives a year. The association invested more than $543 million in fiscal year 2005-06 for research, professional and public education, and advocacy so people across America can live stronger, longer lives.

Thanks to all our walkers, donors and volunteers who have accepted the challenge to help fight heart disease and stroke. We cannot achieve our mission without each one of you!
