Meet Lance Frye

While still in the womb, Lance Frye was diagnosed with a type of heart disease that held a very high mortality rate called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. Lance's parents, Betsy and Wilbur were given the option to abort and were told that they must have an amniocentesis performed to rule out any other birth defects. Betsy went for weekly non-stress tests and sweet Lance was born on March 24, 1997 at Magee hospital where he was immediately transferred to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. The family was aware of the dire situation and that surgery must be done immediately after birth. Lance was kept on life sustaining medication and surgery was performed when he was just one fragile week old. To the family's horror, Lance had a brief cardiac arrest that evening and was successfully resuscitated only to arrest for 45 minutes the following morning.

The family was taken to a private office and told that they had never successfully resuscitated a Norwood baby and to prepare for the worst. By the grace of God, the medical staff were able to save Betsy and Wilbur's miracle baby.

With all of the ups and downs that the family has experienced, they still have their little boy. If Lance had been born just a few short years earlier, they realize that his life would have been cut-short. Thanks to the American Heart Association and his fantastic Medical staff at Children's Hospital, Betsy and Wilbur were able to hold their "miracle baby", who is now a handsome young man today.

Lance Frye: He is truly an inspiration!

Since 1924 the American Heart Association has helped protect people of all ages and ethnicities from the ravages of heart disease and stroke. These diseases, the Nation's No.1 and No.3 killers, claim more than 910,000 American lives a year. The association invested more than $543 million in fiscal year 2005-06 for research, professional and public education, and advocacy so people across America can live stronger, longer lives.

Thanks to all our walkers, donors and volunteers who have accepted the challenge to help fight heart disease and stroke. We cannot achieve our mission without each one of you!
